A new version of the Patient Journey Demonstrator is now available. This release has focused on creating some rich capabilities around clinical noting and terminology encoding. Microsoft Health CUI has partnered with Health Language Inc.to build SNOMED Clinical Terms® into the demonstrator, allowing experimentation with creating information-rich notes.
This release also includes an exciting new way to highlight and annotate the ECG charts displayed in the Deep Zoom technology of Microsoft® Silverlight™ and an all-new Show Guide feature that gives even more information about each screen, and links straight to the relevant information on our own www.mscui.net.
The demonstrator now also displays better at lower resolutions. Using scaling, the application can size to lower resolutions, without losing any information from the screen. Shrinking the application in one direction can even increase the amount of data shown!

Clinical Noting using Health Language (in the Primary Care Demonstrator)
We have provided two different ways to add clinical terms: Single Concept Matching and Free Text Matching. Both methods can be found in the Add a consultation section of the Primary Care Demonstrator.
Here’s what to do when using the Single Concept Matching method to add terms:
-
In the Primary Care Demonstrator, double-click on a patient name to open a record and select Menu > New Consultation to add a consultation.
-
Type a problem in the Problem field; this field is the Single Concept Matching control.
For example, if you start typing Hypertension, after you have entered the third character, a search for clinical terms is initiated:

The results are displayed in a list below the text box.
-
Use the mouse or the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate through the list.
-
Double-click on a term or press ENTER to select it:
-
Once you’ve selected a term, a text field appears below, allowing additional information to be entered. As you type text, key words or phrases (which are linked to characteristics of the selected term) are highlighted in blue and appear in a list above the text box.
-
Select a check box to confirm that the corresponding word or phrase should be applied; if selected, the text in the text box turns gray:
Here’s what to do when using Free Text Matching method to add terms:
-
In the Primary Care Demonstrator, select 7. Add a consultation from the navigation bar to start a new consultation.

The fields on the screen will be pre-populated.
-
Type some notes into a text field (for example, the History field):
-
Press ENTER or click Find Matches. Words that could have a clinical meaning are highlighted:
-
Click a highlighted word that best describes the clinical term you require. A list displays enabling you to further refine your selection:
-
Click the ‘+’ symbol to expand the term you require.
-
Click the option button to select the term you require.
-
Once a term is selected, click Add Details in the fly-out menu on the right to add specific information about this term:

In the fly-out menu, selecting a characteristic from the list on the left presents the possible values on the right. A value can be selected for each characteristic.
-
Click OK to save the selected encoding:
Highlighting and Annotating Deep Zoom (Secondary Care Demonstrator)
Where Deep Zoom technology has been used to visualize the patient’s ECG charts, the capability to add highlighting and notes to the charts and have them move around in a really dynamic way has been added.
Here’s how to add highlighting and notes to a chart:
-
Whilst navigating the Deep Zoom ECG charts, hold down CTRL on your keyboard and draw a box around a region of a chart.
-
Optionally, type a note in the text field:

Any number of annotations can be added:
-
Click on an annotation to zoom in on it. When this happens, other annotations may move off the screen. Markers appear around the edges indicating that there are notes out of sight. This prevents the chance of something being missed:
-
Click on a marker to zoom straight to an annotation.
-
Click Annotations on the right of the screen to view a slide-out list which presents all associated notes and comments and provides a mechanism for navigation.
Help and Guidance (in all Demonstrators)
Clicking Show Guide (in the top right corner) shows a new dynamic help and guidance system. The demonstrator dims a little and overlays appear showing what you can do on the various panels. Further, it highlights where Microsoft Health CUI guidance and controls have been used and provides links to the related pages:
We hope you enjoy using the new features in the Patient Journey Demonstrator. Please provide feedback to mscui@microsoft.com or on our CodePlex Discussion Boards.
